About Spar
International Spar was founded in the Netherlands in 1932 by Adrian van Well in Zoetermeer. In the early 30's independent retailers struggled with severe competition from the growing multiples, but also the wholesalers had to fight for their business. With almost 1200 food wholesalers in a small country like the Netherlands, the only solution to survive extreme difficult circumstances was to unite the efforts of both independent wholesalers and retailers.
The first voluntary chain was founded and named "Door Eendrachtig Samenwerken profiteren allen regelmatig", whereby the first characters of each word form the words "DE SPAR". The formula proved successful in the Netherlands and SPAR soon found response abroad first in Europe, and later also in Africa, the Far East, and South America. SPAR is now represented in 27 countries world wide.
