SPAR Brand, the largest & best known brand in the independent sector.

SPAR brand has often been called "the jewel in SPAR's crown", & it is undoubtedly the organizations biggest single asset. The first SPAR brands were introduced in the late 1950's since when SPAR has pioneered many areas of own label development .SPAR brand is the most successful own brand outside the multiple sector, with a range of 900+ products & a retail sales value of £360 million per year. It has grown by £100 in the last 5 years. 1.4 million SPAR brand products are sold every day which equates to 58,300 every hour. On average SPAR brand accounts for 22 % of store sales & generates £100 profit for spar retailers every year.

SPAR has always maintained a quality, yet value for money approach to its Own Brand, simultaneously maintaining a retail price point which provides a reasonable level if gross profit (21% on average) for retailers. While the range does still retain a base of mainstream grocery lines, development, in recent years, has been most rapid into convenience areas. Departments such as fresh/chilled, off license, confectionery, crisps/snacks, soft drinks & carbonates have all expanded rapidly.

In certain areas within SPAR stores, for example, off license, SPAR Brands provide 28% of total sales & in more & more stores one finds members are de-listing secondary brands, stocking only the major proprietary brand & the own label product.

4 years ago SPAR introduced a SPAR fresh range of products which has grown to a £140 million range in its own right. The development of SPAR fresh has now become one of great impetus as SPAR as an organization places greater emphasis on the chiller cabinet. It has become a major source of profit potential in a sector which traditionally generates higher gross margins. SPAR's ability to distribute chilled foods on a national basis has also widened the gap between it & every other single group operator. The growth of SPAR international brands is one of the keys to establishing SPAR as a global retailer. The international range now comprises 22 brands with 56 individual products. This figure is number is growing all the time & will undoubtedly rise above 200 lines.
